Job Description

The Anaesthesia Technician performs in the OT, where the anaesthesia services staff provide anaesthesia for elective and emergency surgery, obstetric and medical procedures as required, in patients of all age groups from newborn to the very elderly.

Responsibilities

ManagerialMaintaining sufficient inventory of material supplies and equipment for performance of dutiesReporting shortage of materials to supervisor at earliest convenience, maintaining records for ordering and replenishments
TechnicalTo assist during induction of maintenance of and recovery from anesthesia.Checks anesthesia machine very morning prior to surgery to ensure that the gas scavenging system is attached and the suction apparatus is attached and functioning.To provide assistance to anesthesia personnel in assembling equipment and supplies for the administration of anesthesia.To perform cleaning of equipment and storing of supplies and to clean anesthesia work spaces and storage areas.Incumbent works with a wide variety of equipment peculiar to administration of anesthesia, patient monitoring and related life support systems and must be familiar with intravenous fluids plus and blood administration system.Understands sequence of procedures required for rapid induction and intubation used in emergency cases to prevent vomiting and aspiration.  Performs Sellick’s Maneuver (Cricoid pressure) as required.Positions patients for surgery and those requiring spinal or epidural anesthesia with awareness of requirement of a sterile and sterile technique for the procedure.Learn and keep current with the name of equipment, supplies and pharmacological agents and is familiar with locations of same.Assists anesthetists with starting I.V. infusion.Share “on call” rotation to provide assistance for emergency surgeries during other than normal hours, i.e. nights, week ends and holidays.Maintains awareness of safety hazards and takes necessary action to prevent accidents.Attends OT staff meetings on a regular basis.Maintains confidentiality of patient records and activities in the O T.Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned by Unit Supervisor/Charge Nurse/or other Anesthetist.Participates in any Performance improvement activities and scheduled continuing education and updating.To assist during sedation.
Quality and SafetyPromoting and maintaining quality in all services and ensure continuous quality improvement measures are in place. Conduct method evaluation/ development as per standard policies and proceduresComplying with all safety and quality control programs and procedures as applicableComplying with applicable precautions for environmental safety, infection control, using a series of interventions that minimize or prevent cross infectionsEnsuring that safety procedures and quality assurance tests are maintained within all sectionsComply and support clinical audit processes within the service and report on these as agreed Communicating in a professional and courteous manner with patients, family and other medical personnel as necessary to obtain information for laboratory records, explain procedures, clarify orders and communicate status.   
Continuous EducationParticipating in education sessions for department staff, doctors and nurses on the safe and secure handling of equipment, i.e teaching, induction, peer review, case studies, and clinical presentationsParticipating in department programs/ committees, various hospital committees, and staff meeting (when requested) Participating in the orientation and training of new employeesMaintaining professional knowledge by attending lectures, seminars or on-line education sessionsCompleting and maintaining all regulatory requirements including licensure and certification and other mandatory training within established time frames.The ability to apply technical skills, together with a demonstrable knowledge of and interest in sciences, such as anatomy, physiology and physics;
Occupational Safety and Health Management Systems  Comply with all OSH and infection control policies, standards and procedures and cooperate with hospital management to comply those requirementsNotifying OSH Hazards, incidents, Near misses and issues and assistance with the preparation of risk assessments, incident reportsAttend applicable OSH/Infection control training programs, mock drills and awareness programsComply with reasonable OSH instructions, policies and safe working procedures Use of appropriate personal protective equipment and safety systems.  Be familiar with emergency and evacuation procedures  Not wilfully or recklessly endanger anyone’s health and safety Comply with Waste management procedures and policies. Reduce, Reuse, Recycling of waste as much as possible Attend all OSH Trainings, awareness programs and mock drills. Participates in the OSHMS audits, inspections, ensuring standards are maintained
Prevention and Control of Infection (PCI):  PCI is everyone’s responsibility. All staff are required to read and implement the NMC PCI Policy and Strategy in an effort to maintain the highest possible standards of cleanliness at all times, thus reducing the risk of infection in patients, staff and visitors. The strictest hand hygiene, 5 moments of hand hygiene, bare below the elbows and environmental care, will be expected of all staff, including the post holder, at all times

Qualifications

Qualification, Licensure, Experience and Special Skills:
Qualifications & licensureRequired:Anaesthetic Technician certificate.Current DHA License to practice in Dubai, U.A.E.Minimum 2 years’ experience after qualification.Must be fluent in spoken & written English.  Spoken Arabic advantageous.
Experience required in addition to the Qualifications mentioned aboveRequired:Currently licensed in country of origin and with DHA license to practice in Dubai U.A.E. 
Specialist CertificationRequired:  NADesired:  NA
Additional requirements Self-motivation and the ability to work under pressure;Fluent spoken and written English. Spoken Arabic is advantageous but not essential.A supportive and caring disposition;Adaptability and good time management skills;Confidence in dealing with stressful situations;IT competencies.
