Job Description

The Cardiology Registrar is responsible for delivering high-quality, patient-centered cardiovascular care under the supervision of the Consultant Cardiologist. The role combines clinical expertise, evidence-based practice, and effective interdisciplinary collaboration to support the assessment, diagnosis, management, and follow-up of patients with cardiovascular conditions. The Cardiology Registrar contributes to clinical quality, patient safety, and the continuous improvement of cardiology services within both physical and virtual care settings, while advancing their own professional development.

Clinical Assessment and Diagnosis

  • Conduct comprehensive cardiovascular assessments including detailed patient histories, physical examinations, and review of diagnostic investigations
  • Utilize diagnostic tools including ECGs, echocardiograms, and stress tests to support accurate diagnosis
  • Engage with patients to explore symptoms, medical history, risk factors, and lifestyle
  • Escalate complex or high-risk cases to the Consultant Cardiologist in a timely manner
  • Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation in the EMR system

Management and Treatment Planning

  • Develop and implement individualized, evidence-based treatment plans for patients with cardiovascular conditions
  • Collaborate with patients to establish realistic and achievable treatment goals
  • Monitor patient progress and adjust treatment plans in response to clinical evolution
  • Manage pharmacological therapy appropriately and educate patients on medications
  • Initiate appropriate referrals to higher levels of care or specialist services when indicated

Clinical Quality and Safe Practice

  • Adhere strictly to clinical protocols, evidence-based guidelines, and best practices in cardiology
  • Participate in quality assurance initiatives, clinical audits, and peer review activities
  • Report and investigate clinical incidents, near misses, and adverse events
  • Support compliance with regulatory, accreditation, and institutional quality standards
  • Maintain safe prescribing practices and minimize clinical errors

Multidisciplinary Collaboration

  • Participate actively in multidisciplinary team meetings to discuss complex patient cases
  • Communicate effectively with nursing, allied health, and other medical specialties regarding patient management
  • Coordinate referrals and care transitions with external specialists and community services
  • Provide colleagues with timely updates on patient status, clinical findings, and management plans

Patient Safety and Satisfaction

  • Implement and monitor patient safety protocols and initiatives within the cardiology setting
  • Educate patients and families on their conditions, treatment plans, and preventive care strategies
  • Address patient concerns promptly, with empathy and clarity
  • Gather and respond to patient feedback to support continuous improvement in patient experience

Professional Development and Compliance

  • Participate in continuing medical education (CME) and relevant professional development programs
  • Stay updated on advancements in cardiology guidelines, telemedicine, and evidence-based practice
  • Maintain active SCFHS registration and comply with all licensing and credentialing requirements
  • Mentor junior staff and contribute to their professional growth and development

Skills

Technical Skills:

  • Strong cardiovascular diagnostic skills including ECG interpretation, echocardiography, and stress testing
  • Proficiency in telehealth technologies and digital health platforms
  • Proficiency in using electronic medical records (EMR) and clinical documentation systems
  • Strong clinical judgment and analytical skills in cardiovascular disease management
  • Ability to manage acute and chronic cardiovascular conditions safely and effectively
