The Consultant Ophthalmologist – Vitreoretinal Surgery will provide expert specialist care in the diagnosis, medical management, and surgical treatment of disorders affecting the retina, vitreous, and macula. The consultant will play a key role in delivering high-quality, patient-centred care for both routine and complex medical and surgical retinal conditions, including urgent and vision-threatening presentations. The successful candidate will contribute to the continued development and growth of vitreoretinal services, working closely with medical retina, cataract, uveitis, emergency eye care, optometry, and other multidisciplinary teams while maintaining the highest standards of clinical quality, safety, and patient experience.
Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, and management of vitreoretinal disorders in outpatient, emergency, and surgical settings.
- Diagnose and manage retinal detachment, retinal tears, vitreous haemorrhage, epiretinal membrane, macular hole, diabetic vitreoretinal disease, complications of posterior segment pathology, and other retinal conditions within scope of practice.
- Perform vitreoretinal surgery including pars plana vitrectomy, retinal detachment repair, membrane peeling, endolaser, gas or silicone oil tamponade, and other related procedures as appropriate.
- Manage urgent and emergency retinal presentations requiring timely intervention to preserve sight.
- Interpret and correlate clinical findings with relevant investigations including OCT, fundus photography, fluorescein angiography, B-scan ultrasonography, and other retinal imaging as appropriate.
- Work closely with medical retina, uveitis, glaucoma, cataract, cornea, emergency, endocrinology, internal medicine, and other specialties to provide coordinated patient care.
- Participate in outpatient clinics, laser sessions, intravitreal injection services where applicable, operating theatre sessions, and emergency or on-call cover as required by the service.
- Maintain accurate, timely, and comprehensive clinical documentation.
- Communicate clearly and compassionately with patients and families regarding diagnosis, prognosis, treatment options, surgical risks, and follow-up care.
- Support development of vitreoretinal pathways to improve access, efficiency, clinical outcomes, and continuity of care.
- Supervise, teach, and support junior doctors, fellows, optometrists, nurses, and allied healthcare professionals where applicable.
- Participate in audit, governance, morbidity review, research, and continuous professional development activities.
- Ensure compliance with hospital policies, professional standards, regulatory requirements, and patient safety protocols.
- Contribute to the reputation and continued growth of the vitreoretinal service through excellence in clinical care, teamwork, and service development.
Qualifications
- Medical degree from a recognised institution.
- Completion of accredited specialist training in Ophthalmology.
- Fellowship, CCT, CCST, American Board, FRCOphth, or equivalent recognised specialist qualification in Ophthalmology.
- Fellowship training or equivalent advanced subspecialty training in Vitreoretinal Surgery.
- Eligibility for DOH / HAAD consultant licensure in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
- Significant post-certification experience as a specialist or consultant in vitreoretinal surgery.
- Demonstrated expertise in the diagnosis and management of medical and surgical retinal disease.
- Strong experience in vitreoretinal surgical procedures and management of complex posterior segment pathology.
- Experience working in a tertiary, specialist eye hospital, or high-volume ophthalmic service is highly desirable.
- Strong clinical judgment and ability to manage both routine and complex retinal cases safely and effectively.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to provide compassionate and professional patient care.
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Commitment to clinical governance, audit, teaching, and service development.
- Evidence of ongoing professional development, research, teaching, or publication activity is desirable.
