Job Description
The Ophthalmology Specialist is responsible for providing high-quality, patient-centered ophthalmology consultations, assessment, diagnosis, and clinical management of ophthalmic conditions under the supervision of the Ophthalmology Consultant. The role supports outpatient and virtual ophthalmology services, delivers care within the approved scope of practice, and upholds standards of evidence-based, patient-centered practice. The Ophthalmology Specialist actively contributes to clinical quality, patient safety, and their own ongoing professional development within the ophthalmology service.
Clinical Assessment and Management
- Assess, diagnose, and manage common ophthalmic conditions within the approved scope of supervised practice
- Perform ophthalmic examinations including slit-lamp assessment, fundoscopy, visual acuity measurement, and intraocular pressure testing
- Request and interpret ophthalmic investigations (OCT, visual fields, imaging) where appropriate
- Escalate complex, urgent, or high-risk ophthalmology cases to the supervising Consultant promptly
- Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation in the EHR system
Ophthalmic Procedures and Patient Care
- Perform ophthalmic procedures within approved clinical privileges and under supervision where required
- Assist in minor procedures, laser clinics, and intravitreal injection services
- Provide structured follow-up care and patient counselling regarding treatment plans and medications
- Participate in telemedicine and virtual ophthalmology service delivery
Clinical Quality and Safe Practice
- Adhere to clinical guidelines, patient safety standards, and institutional policies in all clinical interactions
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives, clinical audits, and incident reporting
- Ensure compliance with CBAHI, JCI, and applicable regulatory requirements
- Maintain infection prevention and medication safety standards at all times
Multidisciplinary Collaboration
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary healthcare teams regarding patient management, referrals, and care planning
- Communicate effectively with referring physicians, allied health staff, and nursing teams
- Coordinate ophthalmology referrals, follow-up plans, and care transitions efficiently
Professional Development and Training
- Participate in CME activities, departmental teaching sessions, and clinical meetings
- Maintain an updated training portfolio and progressively develop clinical competencies
- Seek regular feedback from the supervising Consultant and implement development recommendations
- Support teaching activities for junior staff and medical students where applicable
Professional Conduct and Compliance
- Maintain professionalism, ethical conduct, and patient confidentiality at all times
- Work within the approved scope of supervised practice at all times
- Comply with institutional policies, SCFHS regulations, and clinical governance requirements
- Complete all mandatory compliance, credentialing, and training requirements in a timely manner
Skills
- Knowledge of ophthalmic examination techniques including slit-lamp assessment, fundoscopy, visual acuity measurement, IOP testing, and OCT
- Clinical assessment and management of common ophthalmic conditions within scope of supervised practice
- Familiarity with ophthalmic diagnostic tools and equipment
- Proficiency in EHR systems and telemedicine platforms
- Good clinical reasoning, diagnostic thinking, and patient management skills
- Good communication and interpersonal skills with patients and colleagues
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team
- Commitment to patient safety, quality improvement, and evidence-based practice
