JOB SUMMARY

The Physician – Anesthesiology Pediatrics is responsible for leading and supervising the delivery of high quality evidence-based care for pediatric patients requiring anesthesia or perioperative care; This includes effectively and efficiently diagnosing, managing, treating all patients placed under the post holder’s care within the usual scope of anesthetic services. The Physician – Anesthesiology Pediatrics is expected to be an example of clinical excellence within his or her specialty and to provide leadership and training for junior medical staff. S/he is expected to demonstrate an active interest and involvement in research. Interdisciplinary and multi-level educational contributions are integral to this post, and may include bedside teaching, formal didactics, participation in simulation training, and written communications that are educational in nature. 

The Physician – Anesthesiology Pediatrics will endeavor to obtain a full-time appointment to Weill Cornell Medical College – Qatar and will collaborate with the Medical School, to provide teaching support for instruction regarding the basic science and clinical curriculum by the members of the division for the undergraduate medical students and  residents as required for an ACGME curriculum. 

Responsibilities

KEY ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • In conjunction with the Department Chair and Division Chief, identifies and articulates the vision, strategic direction, and growth of the Sidra Department of Anesthesiology. The postholder makes daily clinical decisions in the provision of providing excellent patient clinical care.
  • Provides excellent patient clinical care, as informed by current standards of recognized leading western medical organizations.
  • Provides anesthetic care including general anesthesia, all forms of neuraxial regional anesthesia, peripheral nerve blockade, intravenous and inhalational analgesia, monitored anesthesia care and emergency airway management conforming to the best current practices as defined by major western (EU and/or North American) anesthesiology organizations.  Provides pre-anesthetic and post-anesthetic consultative care, follow-up, and appropriate referrals. Performs pre-anesthetic informed consent discussions with patients and families and provides documentation thereof.
  • Covers emergency and on-call duties as determined by the Division Chief and or his/her designee.
  • Participates in clinical care at offsite locations such as the Hamad General Hospital as required
  • Works collaboratively with Weill Cornell Medical College – Qatar to provide teaching support for instruction regarding the basic science and clinical curriculum by the members of the division for the undergraduate medical students and surgical residents as required for an ACGME curriculum
  • Works in a in a congenial, supportive, collaborative and equitable environment. 
  • Works collaboratively with other physicians, nurses, other health care providers and all other division staff to ensure that cohesive, cross functional teams are maintained.
  • Promotes mentorship and academic career development for junior team members.
  • Participates in clinical research projects
  • Provides accurate and timely quality and safety data on each patient care encounter.
  • Actively participates in graduate medical education and in education for nursing, technical staff, and other physicians as necessary
  • Communicates effectively, consistently, and in a timely manner with colleagues and other staff members
  • Keeps excellent and complete electronic medical records. Mentors others in the optimal utilization of electronic records.
  • Participates actively and is a leader in in departmental meetings, retreats, journal clubs, simulation activities, and other agendas
  • Performs departmental duties as requested by the Division leadership.

Scope of clinical responsibilities 

  • Provides anesthetic, analgesic, and consultative care of pediatric patients.  This includes clinic and outpatient consultations, anesthesia sedation and monitoring, anesthesia for operative procedures for that are routine, urgent and emergent. Provides anesthetic care including general anesthesia, all forms of neuraxial regional anesthesia, peripheral nerve blockade, intravenous and inhalational analgesia, monitored anesthesia care and emergency airway management conforming to the best current practices as defined by major western anesthesiology organizations.  Provides pre-anesthetic and post-anesthetic consultative care, follow-up, and appropriate referrals.  Performs pre-anesthetic informed consent discussions with patients and families and provides documentation thereof.
  • Effectively interacts and contributes to multi-disciplinary teams required for optimal care of the pediatric patient population.
  • Provides clinical services as required to maintain, as much as possible, continuous coverage for the population. This may include rotations at partner institutions such as Hamad Medical Center; it will require participation in on call roster. 
  • Participates in medical research/academic projects for the Department of Anesthesiology. This includes the participation in joint programs, collaborations and primary projects of the Department. 
  • Is accessible and available to referring physicians and allied health care providers.
  • Works cooperatively with other members of department to ensure that a high standard of patient care services is maintained.
  • Facilitates patient access to medical care by recommending appropriate referrals to other health care providers in accordance with policies and regulations of the facility.
  • Undertakes appraisals of staff as directed. 
  • Participates in mandatory training and actively practices continual professional development in alignment with Sidra’s professional development programs to ensure maintenance of professional licensure/accreditation
  • Develops and/or delivers training programs to new employees on equipment and procedures in the area of operations in alignment with the department’s and Sidra’s training objectives and plans
  • Provides support and relief for other anesthesiologists and CRNAs as required and appropriate.
  • Participates in community outreach programs and initiatives undertaken by Sidra
  • Observes departmental and applicable organizational policies, procedures, regulations and information to the Department of Surgery care team
  • Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner. Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the facility, and maintains patient confidentiality at all times
  • Is a role model for other anesthesiologists and anesthesia providers in exemplary patient care, mentoring of other clinicians, and creating a fair, respectful and equitable work environment.
  • Adheres to the medical staff bylaws:
  • Supports, implements, and follows all Sidra, department and divisional initiatives, policies and procedures.
  • Help lead, implement, and participates in the organization’s performance management system, including peer review and the productivity and utilization review process.
  • Overseas the clinical activities of the junior medical staff and nurse practitioners (CRNAs) and assume responsibility for the care they provide.
  • Diagnoses and treats patients according to established standards of best practice for the specialty of anesthesiology.
  • Fosters a culture of learning, development and continuous improvement across the department
  • Complies with all established Sidra polices regarding admissions, consultation, daily patient care, surgical procedures, discharge protocols, outpatient and follow up practices.
  • Practices appropriate utilization of Sidra’s resources.
  • Performs clinical duties and ensure continuity of care.
  • Engages in research development activities with a professional and applied focus in keeping with Sidra Research protocols, vision and strategy.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Education

  • M.D. Degree or Equivalent; 
  • Board certification in Anesthesiology 
  • Fellowship or  equivalent training in Pediatric Anesthesiology

Experience:

8+ years of post-board certification/fellowship training experience
