• Provides surgical care (pre and post-operative), postnatal care, breastfeeding advice and support to women and their babies.
• Performs initial assessment and reassessment of patients in the department including neonates, pediatric and adult patients
• Demonstrates knowledge of electronic fetal monitoring using CTG and central monitoring system.
• Is able to provide a high standard of care to all Specialties that falls within the hospitals scope of practice.
• Initiates Intravenous Therapy as per Doctors orders
• Demonstrates skills in routine care for newborns, rooming in with mothers.
• Participates in emergency code drills and performs when necessary
• Acts as Team Leader in the absence of the Charge Nurse and is able to delegate tasks as per skills and scope of practice.
• Demonstrates knowledge in caring for patients admitted for induction of labor.
• Monitors early progress of laboring mothers before transferring to labor ward, interprets fetal heart rate and notifies Physician when appropriate for progress or problems.
• Performs post-partum care of mother, performs fundal massage and monitors vital signs, blood loss as needed and promotes newborn/parent bonding
• Performs the Appropriateness review of medications before preparing and administering medications as required.
• Responsible for coordinating with the Obstetrician, Neonatologist / Pediatrician and other allied workers to provide comprehensive care to patients.
• Prepares mothers for cesarean sections and provides pre-operative and post-operative care to all patients requiring surgical procedures
• Actively promotes and assists mothers with breastfeeding, basic newborn care and patient education.
• Has skills and knowledge on collection of specimens, bloods for diagnostic testing and critical values
• Knowledge on ordering blood products and monitors patients when receiving blood products.
• Knowledge of Obstetric emergencies, nursing management and care as per protocols.
• Provides appropriate health education to patients and their family
